Twitter has been heated over Stranger Things since the Netflix mega-hit dropped July 4th, and it seems like things are reaching a boiling point.
The main contention point is Police Chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour), who seems to sacrifice himself in order to save the town of Hawkins from Russian spies and, of course, the dreaded Upside Down. Still, he spends most of the season before that terrorizing his daughter Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), screams at Joyce (Winona Ryder) like a loony while simultaneously courting her, and generally wreaking havoc and threatening folks with ultra-violence at every turn.
Fans are SPLIT. The most prominent member of the anti-Hopper camp is Evan Rachel Wood, who basically thinks his "extreme jealousy and violent rages are not flattering or sexy like TV would have you believe," while another user opines that his and Joyce’s relationship is "toxic and very unhealthy."
One observer summed up the conundrum thusly: "I’m 20 minutes into 'Stranger Things' and I’ve already learned that being a good father is about having a full-on psychotic break over the idea that your daughter might be horny."
Not so, argue others. One defender insisted: "hopper lost his daughter and el never had anybody that loved and cared for her, they filled the holes in both their hearts and became a family and i think that’s beautiful," while many others likened his character to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, saying more father should "be amazing" and "sacrifice " themselves to "save the world."
