After catching serious heat, Scarlett Johansson has backed out of her starring role in Rub & Tug, in which she was set to play a transgender man.
The trans community responded enthusiastically, hailing her decision and a new era in Hollywood. "Hollywood changed how Americans understand gay and lesbian lives," GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement, "and TV is starting to do the same for transgender people with authentic transgender portrayals being major hits with critics and audiences. The film industry has a real opportunity to do the same."
Johansson released a statement to Out.com, saying she was motivated to exit the Rupert Sanders film "in light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting."
Rub & Tug depicts the true story of Dante "Tex" Gill, who owned massage/prostitution parlors in Pittsburgh in the 1970s.
