Empire star Terrence Howard is under investigation by the federal government for criminal tax evasion, according to documents obtained by The Blast.
Terrence is reportedly being probed for financial crimes, as is his third wife Mira Howard. (While they got divorced, they were re-engaged in December). Mira’s company Universal Bridges is also under investigation.
His ex Michelle Howard — Terrence was married to Michelle from 2010-2013 — is also still trying to collect on her financial settlement from him following their split, The Blast reports. He is reportedly using the tax evasion case to avoid settling with her.
The United States Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania initiated the investigation and it is ongoing. Terrence was alerted to the probe on May 20th and he has reportedly hired a criminal attorney.
This isn’t his first run-in with the law. In April, the State of California slapped with a fine of $143,538.61. In 2010, the federal government demanded $1.1 million in back taxes.
This scandal is the latest to hit Empire. On Tuesday night, creator Lee Daniels confirmed that Jussie Smollett (who was accused of helping instigate a hate crime against himself, though the charges were later dropped), will not return for the sixth and final season on Fox.
