Soccer Star Megan Rapinoe Named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of Year

U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe has collected more hardware for her trophy case, as she was named Sports Illustrated’s 2019 Sportsperson of the Year on Monday, UPI reports. On the field, Rapinoe had a huge year, leading the U.S. team to the 2019 World Cup title, while winning the tournament’s MVP award, and was also the top scorer in the tournament. Additionally, she was named FIFA’s World Player of the Year. Off the field, Rapinoe has been a vocal advocate for gender pay equity. She is only the fourth female athlete to win the magazine’s award, following Serena Williams, Chris Evert and Mary Decker. “That really means a lot to me,” Rapinoe told Sports Illustrated of winning the award. “I feel like I’m being recognized on behalf of the team and everything we do on the field and off the field for reasons of trying to do better in the world.”
