R. Kelly Arraigned on Bribery Charge Linked to Aaliyah Wedding
R. Kelly pleaded not guilty to charges that he arranged to get a fake ID for an unnamed female the day before he married 15-year-old Aaliyah in 1994, the AP reports. The singer entered his plea Wednesday to a New York court via a video feed from the Chicago jail where he is awaiting trial for multiple sex crime and other criminal charges. In this case, the singer is accused of bribing an unnamed public employee in exchange for a “fraudulent identification document,” and a source tells the AP that it was intended for Aaliyah, who was 15 at the time. The two married the next day, but the union was eventually annulled, and Aaliyah later died in a plane crash at the age of 22. The singer has proclaimed his innocence, with a defense lawyer calling the bribery allegations “baseless.” Kelly is in jail as he awaits charges in multiple jurisdictions over alleged sexual misconduct involving underage girls and related crimes.
