Liam Neeson’s son Micheál is honoring his late mother, Natasha Richardson, by changing his last name from Neeson to Richardson, according to reports. The 23-year-old was just 13 when his mother died at age 45 in a skiing accident in Quebec.
The late Parent Trap star’s mother Vanessa Redgrave, 81, said he didn’t change his name out of lack of respect for his father, but simply to honor his mother.
Redgrave told The Daily Mail: "That wasn’t because he wanted to avoid his father’s fame, which is enormous. He wanted to hold his mother close to him — because she was a remarkable actress. Absolutely remarkable."
In 2015, Micheál spoke of the traumatic loss: "In my mind, subconsciously, I either pushed it out or stored it deep inside. And so, within the next week I was like, ‘Okay, on with my life.’"
But his grief caught up with him: "Things just started going downhill. The people I was with, we were partying a lot. It was dark. I hit rock bottom."
Neeson and Richardson shared two sons: Micheál and Daniel, 22.
