Kanye West’s “Nebuchadnezzar” Opera Starts Late, Draws Mixed Reviews

Kanye West’s new opera Nebuchadnezzar didn’t live up to the hype at its Sunday premiere in L.A. USA Today reports that $20 tickets were still available to the performance–which started more than two hours late–as of that afternoon, while reviews were likewise not-great. USA Today’s critic called it “an ear-throbbing cacophony,” adding that due to poor acoustics at the Hollywood Bowl, “appreciating gorgeous gospel voices was tricky, and following Old Testament storylines even more challenging.” West narrated the opera while reading from the Book of Daniel, while the music only made a few references to ‘Ye’s back catalog, including the hook from West’s song “Wolves” and the tune “Say You Will.” Fans, however, were more charitable, with 31-year-old John Vic telling Pitchfork, “I really loved it and I have a newfound respect for Kanye. I’m going to start attending Sunday Service.”
