JAY-Z Sues Mississippi Prison Officials After 5 Inmates Are Killed in 2 Weeks

JAY-Z is reportedly suing prison officials in Mississippi after five inmates were killed in the state’s correctional facilities over the past two weeks. In a lawsuit filed Tuesday on behalf of 29 Mississippi inmates, the rapper states that “these deaths are a direct result of Mississippi’s utter disregard for the people it has incarcerated and their constitutional rights.” The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Greenville by Alex Spiro, JAY-Z’s attorney. Last week, Spiro also sent a letter to Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant stating that JAY-Z and fellow artist Yo Gotti were “prepared to pursue all potential avenues to obtain relief for the people living in Mississippi’s prisons and their families.” TMZ adds that Gotti asked JAY-Z for help representing prisoners at the Mississippi State Penitentiary, also known as Parchman Farm, where three inmates were stabbed to death in the first week of 2020. According to the outlet, the suit also alleges that “Parchman doesn’t have enough mattresses for the inmates, cells are covered in black mold and raw sewage is spilling out on the floors.”
