Irish Lawmaker Claims Tom Cruise Almost Had Arm Broken Over Diet Coke Ice While Filming “Far & Away”

Life almost imitated art back when Tom Cruise was filming Far and Away in the early ’90s. This week, an Irish lawmaker whose father was the landlord of a bar near the movie’s location claimed Cruise nearly got clobbered in a pub brawl after a regular thought he was trying to steal the bartender’s cigarettes. Michael Healy-Rae tells The Guardian that after a bartender had served Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman two Diet Cokes when stepped away from the bar. That’s when the regular, named Ger, saw Cruise “lean behind the counter and he had his hand dipped inside the counter.” The barfly “jumped up off his stool, he caught his stick and drew a belt at yer man’s hand trying to hit him across the hand. But he just missed and there was a big bang down on the counter.” Cruise reportedly said, “My goodness, I was just leaning in to get a bit more ice,” but the regular said, “You b**tard, you were trying to steal Matt’s fags (slang for cigarettes).” Adds Healy-Rae, “[Cruise] looked at them and said, ‘I was not, I was trying to steal nothing.’ They sipped away at their Diet Coke and left…If Ger had been an inch or two longer, he could have broke [his] arm.”
