MALAYSIA PM ARRESTED IN CASE LINKED TO THE WOLF OF WALL STREET PRODUCER: Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak has been arrested by anti-corruption investigators and will be charged over his role in an alleged multibillion-dollar embezzlement scheme linked to the financing of 2013’s Leonardo DiCaprio-toplined-and-produced The Wolf of Wall Street. His stepson Riza Aziz, founder of Red Granite, is also being questioned by Malaysian authorities over an alleged plot to launder hundreds of millions of dollars for their family through the Martin Scorsese hit and other films Red Granite produced.
NETFLIX ORDERS SALMA HAYEK-PRODUCED MONARCA: Netflix has ordered Monarca, an original drama produced by Salma Hayek, with Irene Azuela (Quemar las Naves) and Juan Manuel Bernal (Capadocia) attached to star. The show will follow the story of Mexican elites, whose lives are threatened by corruption, scandal and violence. "I’m extremely excited to partner with Netflix, and to be working with amazing Mexican talent in front of and behind the camera. We are proud to show Mexico as a vibrant, sophisticated and culturally rich nation, fighting to control its own destiny," said Hayek. The series is set to drop in 2019.
SECRET ROE V. WADE FILM IN THE WORKS: Nick Loeb, most famous for fighting with ex Sofia Vergara over their frozen embryos, is working on a pro-life film about Roe. V. Wade, the famous Supreme Court case that legalized abortion. Jon Voight, Robert Davi and Stacey Dash are starring. Loeb is co-directing with Cathy Allyn, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Shooting began June 15thin New Orleans. THR said the film has been purposefully kept under-the-radar because of the angry reception the idea of the film received. "It’s one of the most controversial political decisions in history. It divides us and makes us uncomfortable," Loeb, tells THR, adding that his own battle with Vergara over access to embryos they created inspired the film. "I have my own pro-life issue going on with my fight over embryos, but no one has really told the whole truth about Roe v. Wade in a film. When I delved into this, I discovered conspiracy theories, fake news, made-up statistics and a whole lot of people involved who switched their positions from pro-choice to pro-life, including Norma."
NETFLIX BEATS BROADCAST, YOUTUBE, CABLE: Netflix has become the most popular platform for media consumption via television, ahead of broadcast TV networks, YouTube and Hulu, according to a new study of 2,500 adults conducted by Cowen & Co. Netflix nabbed 27% of respondents, followed by basic cable at 20%, broadcast at 18% and YouTube at 11%. Among the 18-34 set, the streaming giant’s lead is more significant. About 40% of the younger demo favors Netflix, ahead of YouTube (17%), basic cable (12.6%), Hulu (7.6%) and broadcast TV (7.5%).
DENIS AKIYAMA DIES AT AGE 66: Denis Akiyama, best known for battling Keanu Reeves in Johnny Mnemonic and playing the creator of Pac-Man in Pixels has died at age 66. He was reportedly fighting a "very rare and aggressive cancer," and died at home in Toronto. His son, Kintaro Akiyama, told The Hollywood Reporter: "He went peacefully into the light on the morning of the full moon."
