A STAR IS BORN HEADED TO VENICE: Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born will premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 31. Cooper is directing and co-starring in the film, which also toplines Lady Gaga. Venice will announce its full line-up Wednesday. The festival will screen the Warner Bros. film out of competition. Other major films will also premiere, including Yorgos Lanthimos-directed The Favourite starring Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, and Damien Chazelle’s First Man, which opens the festival.
ROBERT DE NIRO MAY JOIN JOKER: Robert De Niro is reportedly in talks to join Todd Phillips’ Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. He would take on the roll of talk show host, and a guiding force in the development of The Joker.
FIRST TRANSGENDER HERO ANNOUNCED FOR SUPERGIRL: The CW’s Supergirl series will make TV history in Season 4 with the introduction of the first transgender superhero. Activist and transgender actress Nicole Maines (who previously won a discrimination lawsuit against her school) will appear as Nia Nal, or Dreamer in the DC Comics show. Her character is being described as a "soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others."
LUC BESSON’S FILM SCHOOL FACES CLOSURE: L’Ecole de la Cite wanted to bring students from a variety of backgrounds together to learn about the art and business of film, without the stringent requirements and tests other Parisian film schools require. But founder Luc Besson’s financial, professional and private issues may cause the school to close, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was accused of rape and abuse by actress San van Roy. After she came forward, two other unnamed actresses and a casting director accused him of sexual abuse. His recent film Valerian was a financial and critical failure. Besson denies the rape and abuse allegations. The school issued a statement to THR: "Because of insufficient state funding and because private donations are not at the necessary level, the school must redefine the conditions for financial balance," and will "postpone the recruitment of new students."
WALKING DEAD’S SABRINA GENNARINO JOINS THE PURGE: Syfy and USA Network’s forthcoming The Purge series is rolling out the red carpet for Walking Dead alum Sabrina Gennarino. The 10-episode straight-to-series drama spinoff from James DeMonaco’s horror franchise will bow September 3rd.
