Formerly Homeless Waitress Gets $2,020 Tip on $23 Tab to Ring in New Year

A year ago, single mom Danielle Franzoni was living in a homeless shelter, trying to kick drugs. She got sober and proceeded to move to Alpena, Michigan, where she landed a waitressing job at Thunder Bay River restaurant and began to rebuild her life. On Sunday, she was in tears as she tried to figure out how she was going to pay the bills associated with her move into a new home. But those tears turned to elation when one of her customers tipped her $2,020 on a $23 tab. “Happy New Year,” the customer wrote on the receipt, along with the words, “2020 Tip Challenge.” Franzoni tells The Alpena News that she plans to use the money to get her driver’s license back, finish her daughters’ bedrooms and begin to build up her savings. She also dreams of one day opening a women and children’s sobriety house. Later Sunday night, she went out to eat and tipped her waiter $20.30, saying it was her way to “pay it forward.”
