Ellen Gives $20,000 Scholarship to Black High-Schooler Suspended Over His Dreadlocks

A black high-school senior in Texas who’s been suspended from school over his dreadlocks got a little help from Ellen DeGeneres this week in the form of a $20,000 college scholarship. Deandre Arnold explained on Wednesday’s Ellen that his hair is considered a violation of the dress code at Barbers Hill High School if it falls past his collar, even though girls can have long hair. He added about his locks, “It’s really important to me because my dad is from Trinidad. And I really wish the school would kind of be open to other cultures.” DeGeneres then delivered a plea to Barbers Hill administrators, “I am begging you. This kid is a good kid. He deserves to graduate, to walk with all the other kids…I just am urging you to do the right thing, please. Change your mind.” She then surprised Arnold by bringing out singer Alicia Keys, who presented him with the $20,000 check. Keys also told him, “I’m super-proud of you for standing up for what you know is right.”
