“DWTS”: Only 4 Couples Remain After a Shocking Elimination in the Semifinals

On Monday’s Dancing With the Stars, the final five couples faced off in a heated semifinals round, which lead to the most difficult judges’ decision of the seasons so far, when James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater were ousted over Ally Brooke and Sasha Farber. The move was made more emotional by Van Der Beek’s revelation before his second dance of the night, a Foxtrot to Hozier’s “Take Me to Church,” that his wife had suffered a miscarriage. While the duo scored a respectable 27/30 for that routine, they had faltered a bit in their earlier Cha Cha. So when Brooke and Farber scored a perfect 30/30 with their Charleston, it apparently was enough to give them the edge with the judges. Brooke even broke out into tears when she heard that she had been saved by judges Carrie Ann Inaba, and Bruno Tonioli, and tried to give up her place to Van Der Beek. In the night’s other standout dance, Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson delivered a perfect contemporary routine to Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You,” which helped propel them to the next round. Judge Bruno Tonioli praised the performance as “pure art,” and rather than comment, Judge Len Goodman simply stood up and clapped. Heading into next week’s episode, there are now just four couples left: Mitchell and Carson, Brooke and Farber, Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten, and Lauren Alaina and Gleb Savchenko.
