Yellow Springs, Ohio resident and world-famous comedian Dave Chappelle hosted a special "pop-up party and benefit concert" on Sunday, August 25th in Dayton, Ohio's Oregon District, the site of a mass shooting earlier this month that killed nine and injured 27.
Before the event on Facebook, Chappelle encouraged attendees to "live in the moment" and "simply enjoy the experience rather than record via cellphone."
Kanye West brought his Sunday Service to the event, according to TMZ, with a huge crowd congregating to take it in at Riverscape MetroPark. West's wife Kim Kardashian was in attendance with their daughter, North, and son, Saint, 3. Comedian Chris Rock was there too.
Chappelle told the crowd: "Today the whole world is looking at you. Gem City, shine!"
"Listen, we've been through a tough time," he said. "There have been tornadoes, there's been Klan rallies, there's been shootings — but we're still here and we're still strong. And the only way — but not the only way — but the best way that we can honor our fallen is by getting up better than we were before."
"We will not let those people die in vain," he said. "They're our heroes, they are our friends. This is our city. Gem City, shine. Let them know!"
The event was sponsored by the City of Dayton, and organized "to honor those affected by the Oregon District shooting and reclaim the Oregon District as a place to gather, eat, and shop…"
The show ran from 4 pm-10 pm, and was free, though a ticket was required.
