Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians continued to steamroll the box office, with an estimated $27.6 million in receipts over four days in its third weekend out. All told, the film has raked in $116.3 million.
Overseas, Mission: Impossible rocketed into China with the biggest opening day for the franchise over. Mission: Impossible — Fallout launched with $77.3 million, a record for the series and for its star, Tom Cruise.
Observers have been comparing Crazy Rich Asians to The Help, since it was another female-targeted feature based on a book. Over Labor Day, The Help brought in $19.9 million. The Jon M. Chu film will likely outdo The Help, which ultimately brought in $169.7 million.
Warner Bros. also landed the No. 2 slot thanks to The Meg, which nabbed $10.5 million for the weekend and $13 million over four days. Labor Day weekend ticket sales from Friday to Monday are estimated to be around $119.2M, up 22% spike over last year’s dismal showing of $97.8M.
