Beyoncé Honors Uncle Who Died of HIV, JAY-Z Honors His Mom at GLAAD Awards

Beyoncé and JAY-Z recognized their LGBT loved ones while accepting the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Media Awards in L.A. on Thursday night. “I want to dedicate this award to my uncle Johnny, the most fabulous gay man I have ever known, who helped raise me and my sister,” Bey said through tears while standing alongside her husband. “He lived his truth and he was brave and unapologetic at a time when this country wasn’t as accepting. Witnessing his battle with HIV was one of the most painful experiences I’ve ever lived. I’m hopeful that his struggle served to open pathways for other young people to live more freely.” Meanwhile, JAY-Z paid tribute to his mother, Gloria Carter, who came out as gay in 2017. “I get to follow in her footsteps of spreading love and acceptance,” he said, noting that his mother was likewise honored by GLAAD last year. He also thanked her for “her beautiful speech at the end of the song ‘Smile’ and for her allowing me to tell her story.”
