As expected, Aquaman emerged victorious at the box office this weekend, taking an estimated $72 million with preview screenings included. This was an impressive showing for the typically sluggish-pre Holiday box office. The Warner Bros. film made an estimated $410 million overseas and is expected surge past $500 million Christmas Day.
Critics weren’t as enthused: Aquaman currently has a 64 on Rotten Tomatoes, but audience buzz is good. Aquaman earned an A- on CinemaScore. The film stars Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Nicole Kidman, among others.
The House of Mouse released the Emily Blunt-toplined Mary Poppins Returns, bringing in $31 million, with preview screenings included, and helping to push Disney past a domestic annual gross of $3 billion for the second time in three years, the only studio to reach that park. Observers predict Mary Poppins will have long legs; critics approved, giving the movie a 77, and audiences agreed, with an A- on CinemaScore.
